Great Books Assignments: due week of 5/6/13
Homework: 6th Grade LA/Great Books due 5/8/13 1. Finish Reading This Side of Paradise.
2. Were there any new science issue(s) that can be connected to this section of the story?
3. Another technique authors use to keep our interest is the cliffhanger at the end of a chapter (or book). As you come to the end of a chapter and read the ending, make note of a favorite cliffhanger and why you think it is effective.
4. Foreshadowing is another important literary element that authors use to “drop” hints about what will happen later in the book. You can look for foreshadowing as you read and use it to help you think about what might happen next in the story. Record an example of foreshadowing that you notice as you read.
5. Bring an interpretive question to our final discussion on 5/8/13.

o Explain how the bravery of Knut Haukelid, Joachim Ronneberg and the other Norwegians affected the outcome of World War II?
o Why did the workers at Los Alamos have feelings of “pride and horror” after the atomic bomb was dropped?
o How does the author feel about the status of the atomic bomb today?

§ How is the excerpt you read about equality, empowerment, or self-reliance?
§ What were some of the pivotal moments in the author’s life that made her/him want to pursue their work?
§ Can someone be a regular person one moment and a humanitarian the next?
§ What “sticks to you” from your reading?

- Read pages 1-122 of Welcome to the Ark.
- Do you believe that some people are naturally more intelligent than others, or do you think that
with the right teaching anyone could be an Einstein? Do you feel the same way about extraordinary athletic ability, extraordinary artistic ability?
- Do you believe humans are or could be capable of communicating with mental energy? Do you
believe it is possible for humans to communicate with other life forms, with or without language? Can you find examples of such abilities?
- Do you think we "pretty much know" now what the universe is like? Or do you think there is much
we have yet to discover, much that might change our current view? What have been some of the great changes in the way science has explained aspects of the universe?

v Read pages 1- 111 of The Schwa was Here by Neil Shusterman.
- Pick one question and respond in your journal. (Be prepared to lead the discussion on that question.)·
- Look at the names of the main characters and explain why the author chose these names. What insight into their
character do their names give us? ·
- Why does the Schwa agree to be experimented on? Does he have a choice?
- Look for a rupture or surprise in the story. The author wants us to pay close attention to these as there is usually a lot of meaning at these points in a story. Find such a place in the story and interpret the meaning.
